Do your “wants” exceed your “needs”?

In today’s economic times we really need to be careful how we are, not only, choosing to spend our time, but how much we spend on it.

We, as human beings are constantly being forced to make choices in life because our wants, almost always, exceed our needs.  We often have more serious choices in life such as, should you keep going to school or is it time to find that job to pay for all those goods and services.  There are, of course, even more serious choices in the world to continue the negotiations or just declare war.

Why do we do this, simple, happiness....everyone loves to be happy and wants to enjoy doing something we love and is going to pay us well for it.

Although we are complicated humans, most of us are usually fairly predictable, consistent and tend to act like other people around us.  Because of this it makes it much easier to predict the choices of the consumer in the future by their decisions from the past.

When making important choices in life, ask these 3 questions:

  1.  Does each of these possible options make me happy?
  2.  Do any of them have constraints and tradeoffs that can limit your options?
  3. Which one of my options can maximize my overall happiness?

So when you find yourself making a life decision such as, which job you want, make sure you take the time to think about maximizing your happiness, examining your limitations, and the unavoidable constraint, which is, you can only do one thing at a time.
